Brewpubs/Breweries

  • Church Brew Works - And on the seventh day, God had a cold one. This former church turned brewpub is a must see.
  • East End Brewing - Good things come in small packages. East End may be a small operation, but the beer is excellent, and you can't get it any fresher than going down for one of their "growler hours". Try the Big Hop, especially if you can find it on cask.
  • North Country - Just a short drive north of Pittsburgh in Slippery Rock is North Country brewpub.
  • Penn Brewery - If you enjoy German beers and food, this is the place to be. Their annual Oktoberfest celebration is always a fun affair, complete with authentic music and dress.
  • Rivertowne - They have 3 locations in the east suburbs. including a brewpub and a pour house with a large selection of commerical beers. I have yet to make it to any, but the beer selection and prices are supposedly outstanding.
  • Rock Bottom - Brewpub chain located in Homestead. Their flagship beers are fairly ordinary, but they usually have something special on tap that is worth a try. AHA members get a discount.
  • Vodoo Brewing - Founded by Matt Allyn formerly of Four Sons Brewery, this brewery focuses on speciality beers such as their Belgain golden strong with cherries. You'll have to hit the bottle shops to get this brew, as I haven't seen it in any local pubs.

Beer Bars/Bottle Shops

  • D's SixPax and Dogz - A bottle shop and pub with a nice draft selection located in Regents Square. The bottle shop has a large selection of imports and craft beers.
  • FatHeads - No, it's not a life size sticker of Ben Roethlisberger. It's the best beer bar in the Burgh. Forty taps of craft and import brews, not to mention a bottle shop upstairs, and sandwiches big enough to feed a village. In the heart of the South Side.
  • Harris Grill - Bar and grill on Ellsworth Ave in Shadyside. Great outdoor spot, famous for Bacon night. Nice beer selection, but don't be suprised if the beer list is out of date.
  • Kazansky's Deli - Does a corned beef on rye and a cold Dogfish Head draft sound good? This isn't your everyday deli, with 10 taps and a huge bottle selection. Located on Murray Ave in Squirrel Hill.
  • Little Brown Jug - Great food and a nice beer selection. Break out the GPS if it's your first time, as it is easy to miss this little hole in the wall near Millvale.
  • Mad Mex - Numerous locations through Pittsburgh. Great selection of draft and bottled beers, and you can' beat the Happy Hour prices.
  • Market Street Ale House - Located in Market Square downtown, this pub has a nice selection of draft and bottled beers, including some Belgians.
  • Piper's Pub - Beer Engines. If you've never had a hand pulled beer, you are missing out. Piper's has 3 beer engines serving ales from firkins. Match it up with some European football, aka soccer, and you may feel like you've transported across the Atlantic. In the South Side.
  • Pittsburgh Bottleshop Cafe - Restaurant and bar in Bridgeville.
  • Point Brugge Cafe - European Bistro serving traditional Belgian dishes like steamed mussels, frites, and carbonnade flamande. Check out their monthly beer dinners.
  • Sharp Edge - If you like Belgians, welcome to heaven. Easily the best Belgian draft selection in the Tri-State Area. The have 4 locations in Pittsburgh. Happy Hour means half price drafts!
  • Sidelines - This hole-in-the-wall in Millvale sports a lineup of 160 import and craft beers. The prices are so cheap, you might feel like you are committing highway robbery.
